Volvo pipelayers are based on the hydraulic excavator platform, allowing the superstructure to swing a full 360 degrees.

Speaking at the launch, Tomas Kuta, president, sales region EMEA at Volvo CE, called it a 'revolutionary concept', compared with pipelayers based on dozers, which have to turn the whole machine.

The PL3005D has up to 80% parts common with its sibling Volvo excavator, simplifying servicing and maintenance requirements for fleet operators. Users are also able to swap booms and convert it for use as an excavator.

The Volvo range of pipelayers are distinguished by a long boom length, offering higher hook heights and longer reach. The PL3005D utilises a Load Management System (LMS), allowing operators to see what weight can be safely lifted at any position relative to the slope.

Safety and stability are key features, with the PL3005D able to operate on slopes of up to 30 degrees, and a heavy-duty mechanical slew locks fixes the superstructure at any relation to the undercarriage.

If necessary, the 600mm tracks can be upgraded to wider 800mm tracks for extra stability and reduced ground pressure.

Kuta said the company is in the process of product renewal, a process sparked mainly by the emission requirements in Europe and the US.

Volvo CE were the first to enter the construction equipment manufacturer to enter the European market with Tier IIIB engine, with engine technology leveraged off Volvo Trucks, said Kuta.

The PL3005D features a Tier 4i/IIIB engine, so isn't available in the Middle East markets. Buyers here will have to wait for a Tier 2 version of the model to be released.

Currently PL4608 and PL4611 pipelayers are available from Volvo CE dealers in the Middle East region.
